Ephemeral Films

Ephemeral films are non-fiction films usually made for educational, industrial, or promotional purposes. The two classic ephemeral film collections found on the Archive are the Prelinger Archives and AV Geeks.

In addition to these classic collections, you may view guidance films from the post-World War II British government, drive-in movie intermission ads, and videos documenting the history of San Francisco from 1906 to the early 21st Century. Many of these films are available for free download.

Demonstrates a point in Dr Burrhus Frederick Skinner’s research on the psychology of learning: draws an analogy between human behavior and that of a pigeon, and demonstrates the principle that behavior reinforced by a reward is learned, while non-reinforced behavior is abandoned.  Shows how pigeons are taught abnormal behavior patterns by means of selective reinforcement of response and how the removal of the reinforcement causes the gradual extinguishing of the learned response. This film was made to instruct police officers on the basics of childbirth and to show them an actual birth - mostly so they wouldn't panic or pass out when confronted with such a scenario. WARNING! The poor acting by actual police officers and doctors and low production values in this film make the live birth scene even more shocking than others from this genre. George Bernard Shaw, played by Donald Moffatt, analyzes Shakespeare's characterization of Julius Caesar and compares it with his own treatment. In Shaw's words, Caesar "has been praised and damned, lauded as the creator of a great political system, and decried as the destroyer of liberty and human dignity." Shaw claims the character of Caesar was beyond Shakespeare, but admits Shakespeare is still "king of the dramatists." From the EBE Humanities series

Shot in 1949, these long-lost color home movies show Germany in the aftermath of WWII. Some of the cities shown include Dresden, which was leveled by Allied bombs, and Heidelberg. The agony and destruction visible in these images is sometimes hard to watch, but there are also signs of hope. The film includes a train trip to a shattered terminal, and many shots of debris clearing, stabilization and reconstruction efforts. The film ends with a trip high into the Alps.
